Gov. Neil Abercrombie has renominated Hilo attorney Brian De Lima to the state Board of Education.
De Lima, a former chairman of the Hawaii County Council, was appointed to two-year term as the Big Island’s representative in 2009, when voters changed the board’s makeup from elected to appointed positions.
De Lima is currently the board’s vice-chairman.
The nine members of the board serve staggered terms, and Abercrombie has now nominated De Lima for a three-year term to expire June 30, 2016.

De Lima has a unique perspective on the board, having served as the board’s first student member in 1972.
De Lima told Big Island Now that he considers it an honor to serve on the board.
“It’s the best work I’ve ever done in terms of community service,” he said.

The nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate, which is expected to schedule a hearing on the matter before the Committee on Education later this month.
