Hui Pono Holoholona will hold a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats on Thursday at the Elks Lodge in Keaau. The event is limited to 40 cats.

The cost is $45 for domestic cats and $25 for feral cats, and financial assistance is available.

Cats registered for the clinic should not be given food or water for several hours before the surgery and they need to be brought to the clinic in carriers or humane traps.

Pet overpopulation is a serious issue on our island. According Hui Pono Holoholona, 13,000 wild and domesticated animals are euthanized on the Big Island every year.

Advance registration for the cat spay/neuter clinic is required, and appointments begin at 8:30 a.m. To register, email [email protected] or call 968-8279.

Hui Pono Holoholona, a nonprofit group that works to provide low-cost spaying and neutering for Big island cats and dogs, also holds public meetings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. the second Sunday of each month at the Keaau Village Market.
