Zippy’s Coming to Hilo, Lauded for Using Local Beef

Zippy’s restaurants announced today that it will be expanding to Hilo with plans to open its 26th Hawaii location at the Prince Kuhio Plaza next summer.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to serve Hilo and to provide its residents with all of their Zippy’s favorites,” says Zippy’s president Paul Yokota.

“We also look forward to joining and supporting the community by offering employment opportunities and supporting Hilo’s businesses and organizations.”

Zippy’s Hilo will feature a fast-food counter, dine-in restaurant, and a Napoleon’s Bakery including its hot and fresh operation, specializing in “made to order” malasadas.

Zippy’s also features locally grown beef in many of its menu items. On Monday, the company was recognized by the Hawaii cattle industry for winning the National Beef Backers Award for buying and supporting a local product. The national award is given to groups or individuals that support local industries.

Tim Richards, general manager of Kahua Ranch in Kohala and president of the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council, presented Zippy’s president Paul Yokota with the award at a ceremony on Oahu.

“There’s been a reawakening for local beef production,” says Richards. With Zippy’s expansion into Hilo, their demand for locally raised beef will also increase, thereby benefiting many local ranches.
