Both lanes of Highway 19 have been reopened near the Hawaiian Homelands Hall in Waimea, police reported at 11 a.m. today.

An early morning traffic accident near the hall had knocked out power for at least 50 Hawaii Electric Light Company customers and caused traffic delays in the area.

The accident, which took place before 5 a.m. today, prompted police to close Highway 19 at 6 a.m. at the 54- and 55-mile markers while the pole was down.

Two hours later, one lane of traffic had opened at the 55-mile marker.

A HELCO spokesperson said the utility needs to replace the power pole, and the task is expected to be completed by the end of the morning. Power is expected to be restored to those 50 customers by the time the new pole is installed.
