Big Island police said Thursday that the man who apparently drowned Wednesday while scuba diving in Kona was 49 years old.

Police had previously given an incorrect age for William Savage, a resident of the Okotoks province of Alberta, Canada.

Police were told that Savage was with a group of people who were part of a scuba diving tour in waters north of Honokokau when a large surge sent him into some rocks and into the water. When Savage failed to surface, other members of the tour pulled him from the water and began performing CPR.

He was taken to Honokohau Harbor, where police and rescue crews rushed him to hospital. Savage was pronounced dead at 10:23 a.m.
