Every year the costumes, pageantry, beauty, grace and tradition of the Merrie Monarch Festival infuses the island with old-world majesty and unforgettable native culture. Timeless dance, chicken-skin inducing chants, music and island spirit is on display during this weeklong event known worldwide.
On April 8, sleepy Hilo will be roused from its usual slumberous pace with the vibrant exuberance and energy of local hula halau performing throughout the day.
From 9 a.m., hula halau will perform on the hour; the last halau will entertain at 3 p.m. Food, drink and snacks will be available for purchase.
Notably, this event will be the first stop for Merrie Monarch Festival T-shirts and programs. These rather collectible T-shirts change design yearly and have garnered a devoted fan following. Designs for the t-shirts are guarded and finally unveiled during this lively gathering.

While in the area, event-goers may want to visit the Hawaiʻi Naniloa Volcanoes Resort and the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel at noon and 1 p.m., respectively, for their free daily entertainment Monday through Friday.
The Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium is located at 260 Kalanikoa Street in Hilo.
