Gov. Neil Abercrombie today released $27.7 million for capitol improvement projects statewide, including more than $2 million for Big Island projects.
The funding includes $586,000 to continue safety improvements on the Kohala Mountain Road. The funding will pay for the second phase of larger culverts being installed near the 13-mile marker to increase drainage capacity and provide a wider roadway in that area.
Other Big Island projects in the CIP funding include:
$1.05 million for design and construction for the installation of two new generators at Kona Community Hospital.
$550,000 for construction of a new facility at the Arc of Hilo Client Support Services Community and Training Center in Hilo.
$7,200, to go with $28,800 from the federal government, to pay for additional land acquisition needed for the replacement of the South Punalu‘u Stream Bridge in Ka‘u.
Another $11 million is slated for improvements to Department of Health facilities statewide, including four in Hilo: the Hilo Counseling Center, Keawe Health Center, Hilo Environmental Health Services and Waiakea Health Center.

The funding also includes $11 million for improvements to the state’s communication network including the state’s Anuenue and Hawaiian Microwave System, as well as expansion of radio networks statewide.
