UPDATE: Swimmer Pulled From Wailuku River Dies

A 23-year-old man who was held under water for two minutes by rushing water in the Wailuku River died Saturday night.

Police said Joseph Tancredi of Hilo had jumped into a pool about an eighth of a mile from the river bank. After he resurfaced, bystanders administered CPR until paramedics arrived after receiving a 911 call at 6:30 p.m.

Rescue personnel from the Kaumana Fire Station used a helicopter to reach the scene located just above Rainbow Falls.

Tancredi was taken in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
