UPDATE: Police Release Name of Crash Victim

A 61-year-old Kapa‘au woman who died Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash has been identified by police as Raylene H. Kawaiaea.

Police said Kawaiaea died after after the pick-up truck she was driving went off the Kohala Mountain Road and struck a tree.

Waimea firefighters said the victim was pinned in the driver’s seat when paramedics arrived at 2:47 p.m. The woman was transported to Kona Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The woman was alone in the crash that occurred near the 9-mile marker.

Traffic was detoured through the Kohala Ranch road to the Akoni Pule Highway for several hours.
