Much of Highway 180 in Kona was closed for an extended period beginning at about  9 p.m. Saturday while crews repaired power lines that had been downed following a traffic accident.

Police announced the closure of the highway, also known as Holualoa Road, to all but local traffic from its intersection with Palani Road to Hualalai Road. The closure was expected to last until at least noon today, police dispatchers said.

No information was immediately available regarding the accident or any possible injuries.
